north I n север See east, n. North II a северный Русское прилагательное северный соответствует двум английским прилагательным — north и northern. Прилагательное north употребляется в основном как часть имен собственных — названий стран, морей, административных территорий:North America — Северная Америка;
North Africa — Северная Африка;
the North Sea — Северное море;
North Wales —
Прилагательное northern употребляется в свободных словосочетаниях:a northern accent — северный говор, северное произношение;
the northern part of the country — северная часть страны;
to move in the northern direction — двигаться в северном направлении.

•• north/south
•• Last week the house approved a defense bill north of $400 billion. (Wall Street Journal)
•• Просто a fancy way of saying over $400 billion – хотя могут возразить, что появляется элемент некоторого сарказма.
•• When the occupation [of Iraq] turned south, the backbiting and second-guessing were inevitable.
•• (Кстати, о глаголе to second-guess. Merriam-Webster Online: to criticize or question actions or decisions of ( someone) often after the results of those actions or decisions are known. Это подтверждает и приводимый в Webster’s Third International Dictionary пример, довольно окказиональный, на мой взгляд: lived royally by his ability to second-guess the stock market.
•• Look here. What’s bothering you, Geoff? Do you have some reluctance? Because, if you do, I want you to stop right here. I’ll call up Moncrieff and Barnacle and tell’em the deal’s gone south or we need more time. Whatever.
•• If future promised benefits are not cut and the government has borrowed trillions, an economic disaster could occur: the markets go south, interest rates go up, and the economy stalls out.
